Samarkand: monumental scale
Samarkand is often a first choice because of Registan. Its large ensembles and open spaces tell history on a grand scale. Two or three days allow for the centre, a market and personal wandering. It is a practical short trip if you want to begin with the country’s best-known monuments.

Bukhara: detail at a slower pace
In Bukhara, the walk between monuments is part of the experience: narrow lanes, courtyards, domes and craft shops. The city opens up when you can return to a favourite place in morning and evening light. Five days make room for a workshop and unhurried conversations with a guide. Detail lovers may find this their favourite stop.
Can you combine them?
Yes, when there are enough days for both cities and the journey between them. With limited time, seeing one city more deeply is more rewarding than spending much of the break in transit. Check current transport and opening hours before deciding. First-time visitors might begin with Samarkand and save Bukhara for a separate slower trip.
